Dead or Alive?
I can't be the only one who was surprised that Alexander Solzhenitsyn was still alive. Well, actually, he's NOT still alive. The news this morning was that he had passed away at 89.
I can't remember anymore who's with us and who's not. I'm okay with the obvious ones, like Charles Dickens, or Charles Darwin, or Genghis Khan. But it's the folks in their eighties and nineties, the ones who have lived a good life that doesn't include "People" magazine covers and film snippets on You Tube that I can't remember.
Of course I also can't remember the date of my wedding anniversary (around the solstice, June 20th or 21st. Or 22nd) or The Sainted One's birthday (after my mother's, but before my dad's, somewhere mid- to late-September) or the fact that I'm still hauling around that bag of stuff for Goodwill that I've had in the backseat of the car for the past month. So there are clearly no unused brain cells available for remembering whether famous people in the twilight of their lives are still with us or not.
But it actually might make for a fun game: "Dead or Alive?" Something like "Deal, or No Deal" but with people. And no harm there, because if they're alive ... well ... they're alive. And if they're dead, it's not likely that they will come back to haunt you because you've forgotten.
I'll start this game. Prizes will not be awarded. There's no money to be made. You'll just have the joy of knowing that you're smarter than me.
Dead or Alive?
Captain Kangaroo, Buddy Ebsen, Ann Landers, Chuck Jones, Kim Novak, Mr. Green Jeans, Olivia DeHaviland, my mother (trick question).
And I know that you can find this information on the web in about 2 minutes, but where's the fun in that?

Oh, Pat...you're hilarious. I've got three big trash bags for Goodwill in my car, as we speak.
I'll try the game but don't count on me to set the curve:
Capt Kangaroo - dead; Buddy Ebsen - dead; Ann Landers - dead; Chuck Jones - dead (omigod, everyone's dead!!); Kim Novak - alive (thank God); Mr. Green Jeans - dead; Olivia DeHaviland - dead.
How'd I do?

Cathy, I think you're right on all. (A moment of silence for Mr. Green Jeans ...)
Believe it or not, I think that Olivia is alive. I think that I read that a few months ago. Now I will be forced to Google her!
