Patent leather is a classic that’s making a comeback!

This time, it’s not just shoes and bags but jackets (peacoats and short cuts like '50s “toppers”) and coats (trench styles), even great hats.

I always appreciated patent for multiple reasons. First, it’s so practical, especially for those like me (now that I’ve moved east from Arizona) who live in inclement climates that have few sunny days. Patent is resilient, keeps its shape and looks good even when wet.

Secondly, patent leather always has a new appearance because it stays fresh looking for so long. It can add vibrancy to your outfit and visual zing to an otherwise uninteresting ensemble.

Third, patent leather is multi-seasonal; it works all year ‘round. The shine has a “jelly-apple effect” — pick up a bright patent bag, or shoes in bright red or orange and they look delicious.

Happily, I’m seeing patent in a rainbow of colors from neutrals to brights this season. Check out firms like Prada and JP Tod’s who have played with and re-invented patent to produce artful effects in color (“ombre” or a gradual fading effect) and interesting texture (not so shiny).

Though actual garments may prove a bit stiff or hot to wear (always try on to see how supple the garment is,) I think they are well worth the polished look you instantly achieve.

Patent is worth every penny. Pay more for investment pieces for their design appeal and be assured they’ll outlive regular leathers and cloth items in your wardrobe. More good news is that even inexpensive patent pieces look amazing and will last a long, long time.

For a change, this trend has longevity and works for all ages. I recommend it to my boomer clients as often as I do for those much younger.

Shine on!
