Retractable screens keep bugs out, doors safe

Dear Mi-Ling:

I am in desperate need of screen doors for my home. I have double doors and single doors that need screens.

My experiences with screen doors have not been the best. I have small children, and they destroy the screens every summer. I have tried patching the screens, and I've purchased several new screen doors in the past few years. Do you have any suggestions on what to do to keep my home looking nice and the bugs out? Screen doors with large holes are not very appealing.

Dear Karen:

I don't have small children anymore, but I do have a large German shepherd that punctures my screens. Every year around this time, I have to call in a handyman to re-screen my doors. My dog is notorious for jumping on the screens and piercing them with her claws when she gets excited or is ready to come inside. Regardless of how often we scold, her she continues to tear them up.

In my search for a way to keep my screens safe from the claws of my dog, I came across retractable roller screens. The concept is simple, pull the screen out of the roller when you need it, and roll it back in when you don't. This seems like a good solution, and when it's retracted it has less opportunity to get clawed by dogs or mangled by children.

The screens are available for single, double, French and even garage doors. You can choose from a number of finishes including bronze and white.

They cost about $100-$150 per screen for an average door. You also can take your existing sliding screen doors to your local home improvement center and have them re-screened. For more information on retractable screen doors, go to www.glidescreen.com or visit your home improvement store.
