Finding the right color scheme depends on room

Dear Mi-Ling: I have an evergreen microfiber couch and a medium oak wood floor, and an exposed brick fireplace on one wall. What color can I paint my walls?

Michelle

Dear Michelle: Consider brown tones for the walls and mix in some beige. That should look good with your oak floors. Another option is to reverse the colors and apply the creamy beige color on the walls and pull more color in with brown, gold and orange tones.

You didn't mention what the colors were in your brick fireplace. If they are in the red family pull some of those colors into the room as well. If they are creams and browns do the same.

Don't overlook this important fixture in your space. It's the perfect place to display your treasure and draw attention to a specific piece of artwork.

Most people don't realize the value that a working fireplace adds to a home. I have even had people opt out of a fireplace when building a home even though it was in the plan, because it took up too much wall space.

If used properly in the design, a fireplace will enhance the warmth and feel of a room and provide inspiration for your color palette.

I know the value of a working fireplace firsthand. During the December ice storms my power was knocked out for a day. I was fortunate to have several working fireplaces on hand to keep me and my husband warm until the power was restored.

Whatever you decide don't forget to layer your space with rugs drapes, pillows and art work to complete the look!
