Dear Mi-Ling: I have one big room with a kitchen, dining, and living room and all the walls are taupe but I want something new, and to define all the areas to their own separate space. When I think of what colors to go with I am overwhelmed, because I have a navy couch and love seat.

I just do not know what colors to change the living room and the dining room walls and then the kitchen. What colors would you recommend to help define each area? Thank you for any help you can give me.

Dear Monica: How to select a paint color is one of the most frequent questions I receive.

Sometimes you have to work backwards to find the color for your design plan.

Right off the bat, a few options come to mind. It sounded like you might be tired of your blue couches. If so, consider recovering them or purchasing an inexpensive washable slipcover.

Another option is to go pillow shopping. Buy a few beautiful pillows and a throw that will go with your blue couches. Next, purchase a rug that will blend in with the pillows and the throw.

Find a color that is in the pillows or the rug, and make that your living room wall color.

If you have a small space, consider using the same color throughout because it will create a flow and keep the space open. Taupe is a nice neutral color.

You can always go a shade darker or a shade lighter. If your couch is a light or a French blue, try khaki on the walls.

For each space that connects use the same three to four colors. But in each room you can use more of one color to make that space stand out. You can also use different shades of a color to add contrast.

For example, in your living room stick with a khaki wall, a blue couch and then add a darker or lighter shade of the blue to complete the look.
