New season, new hairdo

— It's spring! Time to add vivid color to your wardrobe, show off your toes in pretty sandals and top it off with a new, fresh hairstyle.

"Tell your winter hair and makeup to take a hike for a while," says Pam Cutler, owner of Salon Knotty in Wichita, Kan. "It's spring and time to make a change."

She says that hair trends for spring were inspired by celebrity looks.

Eric Fisher of Eric Fisher Salons agrees.

"Look at the impact of celebrities, Victoria Beckham, for example," he said.

Fisher says that she may be the reason why asymmetrical looks are very big with bangs angling from short to long and uneven sides.

"It's a wiggy kind of fun look, like when you put a wig on and sort of twist it," he said.

"Two of the great looks for the season are long lengths and pixie-style bobs," Cutler said. "But if you've got long hair and you've been thinking about getting a perm, now is the time."

Cutler says waves, "the kind that flounce around your shoulders when you walk," are part of the old Hollywood glamour showing up for spring.

She says the bouncy waves and the myriad of updos are part of the glamorous looks.

"It's polished, but not too perfect. It needs to be slightly messed up for a more modern edge," she said.

Robin Wilborn of Wilborn Hair Co. says that long, flowing hair with "long, flowing layers and long bangs are hitting us from the East Coast and from the West Coast."

And Fisher said, "The longer layers are a throwback to the '70s, maintaining length, with short layers on top and lots of movement."

When it comes to hair color, "blending" is the key word.

Cutler says that chunky highlights are going by the wayside, but there is still plenty of color.

Fisher says the color trend he is seeing includes reds and deep brown, calling it "shade on shade."

"For example," he said, "take a rich, red brown, add a pretty brown and then a pretty red, mix them and add texture and it really flows nicely, partly because the shades aren't major league different."

Wilborn says it's a season for strong solids, warm undertones and, of course, the ever-popular summer blondes.

Spring about face

With glam looks come emphasis on the lashes.

"The eyes are dramatic, but they're pretty clean except for liquid liner and heavy lashes," Fisher said.

"This spring, pastels have it for the daytime, and bronzy gold lids tempered with rich brown shadows add a glamorous touch to neutral pallets for evening," said makeup artist Rachel Mathis, of Wilborn Hair Co.

"For spring, it's matte foundation, so you can save the dewy foundations for summer," Cutler said.
