Our summer vacation is underway and tonight, with any luck, we'll be lodging in beautiful Tucumcari, New Mexico, on historic Route 66. Unfortunately, we are not staying at the Blue Swallow motel pictured above but I love its cool, retro look.
I opted to book a room at the Best Western Discovery Inn - a relatively nondescript establishment by the highway - because it had a swimming pool, a requisite after a nine-hour drive. I hope to get into town to see the Blue Swallow in person and the many artworks that make this the "Gateway City of Murals." Dean's is supposedly "the" place to go for dinner. House specialty: chicken fried steak!
Look for more updates later as we ease on down the road to Santa Fe...
