Eco-friendly flooring poses a challenge for home design

Dear Mi-Ling: I am having real hard time selecting the right paint color for my living room. It has a very light yellow bamboo hardwood floor. We have a dark brown leather sofa with chocolate brown cushions and light, dark brown pillows. The room doesn't get too much light. I prefer warm colors.

I am thinking about using an accent wall. What color should I use for the accent wall and the rest of the wall?

Dear Dennis: I love the fact that you have bamboo wood flooring. It's a great renewable resource that is eco-friendly. When I think of bamboo flooring I see clean lines and muted tones.

You could also go with an ethnic design or incorporate a Zen feel in the space with Asian-inspired pieces.

When it comes to painting the walls I would consider an oatmeal or white linen color. Then pull out all the stops and paint your accent wall in the red-orange family.

The brown couch should go well with these color combinations. Repeat the accent color around the room at least three times. Use it in a pillow on the couch, in a throw on your chair and in a rug on the floor in combination with oatmeal, chocolate and maybe a light green.

Find an incredible piece of artwork to hang on your accent wall that will also bring all of your colors together. Make sure your painting or print has enough white in it to allow the art to pop against the red-orange background.

You could even purchase a canvas and flick the different colors of paint on the canvas to create your own multicolored masterpiece.
