The AP is reporting that Estelle Getty, who played the acid-tongued Sophia on TV's "The Golden Girls," died today in Hollywood. She was 84, two years younger than the actress who played her daughter on the show.
I wasn't a fan of the 'Girls' for more than a couple years (although it seemed to have run forever), but I remember good, laugh-out-loud zingers and the odd casting of tiny Getty and statuesque Bea Arthur as mother and daughter. According to Wikipedia, Arthur was born in 1922, making her two years Getty's senior. Who'd have thought?
Getty almost didn't get the 'Golden' gig because producers were skeptical the fast-talking, fast-walking dynamo could play 80. I guess she showed them. She won the part, and two Emmys.
