It wasn't as bad as I thought. My first home pedicure in years and I didn't spill polish on the carpet or throw out my back while "assuming the position." And I saved a cool 50 bucks to apply to my monthly gasoline bill. (I did miss the lovely massaging spa chair, though.)
I don't want to act like this is a HUGE deal. My first professional pedicure occurred after the ripe old age of 40, so it's not like I've been a lady of leisure for that long. And I can count on one unkempt hand the number of times I've gotten a manicure. (Big waste of time with knock-around mitts like mine.)
But desperate times call for desperate measures and when I did the math, I figured that by tending my own tootsies, I could make up the difference in what a month's worth of gas costs today vs. this time last summer:
June 2007 - $48/week = $192/month
June 2008 - $64/week = $256/month
That's an increase of $64 per month.
Pedicure with tip = $50 every 3 weeks (summer rate)
Extend that over the next four months and I'll be seeing a $44 profit, or $11 a month! Unfortunately, that's not enough to buy my own massaging spa chair. Oh, well. It's comforting to find ways to be frugal, and know I can still bend into a pretzel without breaking.

I tend to my own tooties too. They never look quite right, but I bank on the fact that most people are near-sighted and won't notice the many flaws and nail polish chips. I treat myself once in a while to a pedicure and it's heavenly. Then I go back to wrenching myself into strange positions to get the job done.

You're right, it is a good 5 feet down there to the ground and most of us ARE near-sighted. It's the baby toes that kill me. I was in a position the other night that could qualify me for Cirque De Soleil.
