Life by number: A historic first

America elected our first president of color. Decidedly. No questions. No doubt. I know I wasn't the only woman of my generation crying tears of joy last night.

It was a family affair for me - an evening split between hanging with my daughter at a huge community event downtown, to dropping in on my son's smaller watch party to share a celebratory hug, to watching Obama's speech at home, in private, with my husband. (Good thing, because I was a bit of a basket case. Not something the public would want to see.)

So, a two year campaign is now over. We're all going to have a lot more time on our hands. Let's spend part of it sending good thoughts and prayers to the Obama family. They're going to need them.

I cried, too. It was so moving looking at all the teary faces in the crowds all over the world. I hate to say it because it's so trivial, but I wasn't crazy about Michelle's dress. Maybe the sweater threw it off??

I too found myself moved to tears! I had been avoiding election coverage all day (hate the "talking heads" endlessly blabbing!) and turned on the TV around 9 pm, right as Obama began his speech. I was openly sobbing. Called my mom to share the moment; she too was teary. Then she summed it all up as only an 82-year old can and said: "Well he's elected, now he's gonna have to step in the s--t"!

After I finally stopped weeping, I think I was most struck by Obama's solemn demeanor, both during his speech and on stage afterwards. I could actually see in his face his keen understanding of the gravity of it all. Margo, regarding the dress, I noticed it, too, and thought it was an interesting choice. It will be fun to watch what Michelle does now.
