I enjoyed dinner with a group of high school (and grade school!) chums last night. It reminded me how important it is to stay connected, especially in hard times.
For the first twenty minutes after we arrived at my friend Janet's house, there was a collective regurgitation of stress. It was so therapeutic to hear that I wasn't the only one with my stomach in a knot these past couple weeks. In fact, it's amazing how many of us were having actual symptoms - headaches, stomach problem, weight gain, sleeping too much or too little. (Here's a story on that very subject from the Orlando Sentinel.)
Then, someone broke out scores of photographs from the past and hilarity immediately ensued. Hours later, sitting around the dinner table drinking wine, I experienced a feeling I hadn't had in a long while - comfort.
If you're feeling stressed and strained (and who isn't these days?) I heartily recommend dinner with girlfriends. It will cure what ails you. At least, temporarily.

I did the same thing with three of my girlfriends this weekend. We vented our frustrations, worries and rage over a pitcher of sangria and it was very curative.

Way back when, at a second funeral in less than a year, my sister, my cousin and I acknowledged that this was the only time we ever saw each other and we decided to change that. For over five years now, we meet at my house every second Tuesday. My house because I live alone and they don't. We take turns providing the meal and the bottle of scotch. So, when I get off work tonight, (it's the second Tuesday of October) I'll go home, put on some music and light some insense, take the phone off the hook and they'll arrive at 5:30 on the dot. After some drinks, some baring of souls, sometimes some crying but always hilarious laughter, we eat together. We can talk about anything because nothing leaves that house. By 8:30 it's over till next second Tuesday. It's totally therapeutic and cleansing and we haven't missed once in all this time.
