It's your day, Grandma!

I have no grandchildren. That I know of. (I know, bad joke that I may have used before.) But that doesn't mean I can't wish all of you grannies a happy Grandparents Day!

National Grandparents Day was the brainchild of Marian H. McQuade, a lovely woman from Fayette County, West Virginia, whose motivation was NOT to get gifts, cards and flowers for herself, but to encourage Americans to remember their elderly relatives in nursing homes and to tap the legacy of wisdom only grandparents can provide.

Early in my career, I spent years working in nursing homes and retirement facilities. I have seen first-hand the pain of loneliness when grandparents are forgotten, or neglected, by their "too busy" families. Grandparents Day may not have the Hallmark-caliber clout enjoyed by Mothers Day or Fathers Day...but what a nice reason to give Grandma or Grandpa a call.

And if you're a "grandma" (by this, or any other name), I hope you get a call today, too.

Meanwhile, here's another take on the day from one of my favorite columnists, Jane Glenn Hass, from the Orange County Register.
